Walking across the hills in Rusper, you feel the power of nature as it heads down on its way from the North Downs. It almost feels like the wind is stealing your breath as it rushes past. We are always being told to keep fit, so why not use the free green gym around us to its full advantage? My favourite location when doing personal training for people is outside and in all weather conditions. Rain, wind and snow don’t stop play in Bec’s training schedule. Trying to write a blog tonight but my mind is rather blank. Do you ever have one of those days when nothing sticks and your mind appears to have come in a non-stick variety? It started to make me realise it’s a bit like our daily life. We start with a blank page and fill it with thoughts, feelings and emotions gradually throughout the day. If you could write your own page out with no restrictions I wonder what it would read like? Would you be writing about getting up at a later time than you have to? Would you be working somewhere completely different or maybe lying on a beach somewhere instead? Find a page in a diary or just a blank piece of paper. Write down your ideal day, how you’d feel, and then I challenge to do it. I know some of you have already started on them. If for some of those changes you need an extra hand, you know where I am. Through the power of social internet sites, I regularly have simultaneous conversations with friends in Africa, Australia and the USA from the comfort of my own home. Knowing someone is just there to talk is sometimes the difference between days filled with silence, to a day feeling like you are part of a community, whether local or global. Yes we all know one, I am guessing. So what’s a TOFI? Thin outside fat inside, as quoted by Dr Jimmy Bell, a professor at Imperial College London. According to his research people who ‘look’ the ideal weight can still suffer from the same medical conditions as those who are overweight. Because they think they are ok, they may eat too many fatty or sugary foods, which the body then stores around the belly first. So how can I get rid of internal fat? That’s the easy one. All you have to do is change your diet and ensure you have a good exercise regime. In my Personal Training role I take a group of individuals of different shapes and fitness levels and devise the best exercise programme for them. I like to think of hypnotherapy as stripping away the layers of habits, learnt behaviours and other issues that have built up over time, years maybe in some of the cases I’ve seen. It’s almost like we keep placing another jumper on top of the one we’re wearing. So what do I mean? Well the best way to allow you to see what I mean is to take you through a case study. So let’s take stopping smoking as an example. The base layer of smoking to me is a deep-seated need from past behaviours. Some may have started to smoke at school or watched parents or relatives do the same. It has become that comfort layer close to our body we need (or think we need). Next comes the mid layer that keeps you warm, the fleece layer. This to me is like the comfort level, the one that makes you feel better. Getting out of an uncomfortable situation by ‘going for a cigarette’. Finally comes the insulation layer, the outer layer. This is just like you wearing a certain jacket if you know it’s going to get cold. You build up the behaviour of having a cigarette at certain points on a journey or at certain times of day. So how will I help to you to change the outfit you wear? I will use hypnotherapy with a perfect mix of my other skills to adjust each layer to a perfect outfit for you. I’ll help take those old and comfy base layers off and let your subconscious pick the one that’s the perfect fit for you. I’ll maybe show how the old one probably had a few holes in you hadn’t even spotted. Next, with a mix of hypnotherapy with counselling (or talking) as I prefer to know it, I will help you realise that the comfy layer was not the best fit and work with you to find a fit you would be proud to show off. This may be working on your self-esteem or self-confidence to deal with the situations that drove you to smoke. Finally we will deal with the outer layer. This uses my skills as hypnotherapist but also my previous training in health and sports therapy, helping you to changing the way you live your day-to-day life. So with smoking it may be just asking you to change a route you take to work, as many smokers I’ve talked to smoke at particular points on their journeys. Each layer is just as important as the next to deal with. And look at the rewards and health risks. Smoking 15-20 cigarettes apparently costs around £2500 per year, which could be an amazing holiday fund. Have you ever looked into what’s inside cigarettes to make them so addictive? I challenge you to search on the Internet and see if you would eat the raw ingredients if they were put in front of you and roll them up and smoke them. An uncomfortable feeling creeps up on you and you still have to take that one extra mouthful. We’ve all done it. I did it tonight. I’m feeling like a Buddha-shaped girl. Many people have a compulsion to over eat. It’s not something they can help. Actually in most cases it’s just a habit that has become out of control due to any number of reasons. Maybe that’s you. So if I asked you what caused your excessive eating you might say “I do it when I am upset”, “It started when I retired”, “When I lost my job” or another life changing and upsetting event. Hypnotherapy allows you to access your own subconscious mind where your bad habits and your bad life experiences are stored. What do all these things do for our body? Well in layman’s terms…. Carbohydrates could be likened to the wood on a fire; it provides us with energy. Simple carbohydrates such as cakes and fruit could be described as the small twigs on a fire, quick to burn out. They lack the vital minerals, vitamins and fibre to sustain our body. Rice, pasta, potatoes are known as complex carbohydrates. They take longer to burn and sustain our body for longer. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose and used by the body. So why do we need fat then? Fat provides much needed energy. It would be very difficult to eat the large amounts of food in a very low fat diet and get all the energy you need. It also makes food taste less bland. Fat protects your organs, keeps you warm and helps your body absorb and move nutrients around. It also helps hormone production. Over centuries of evolution our body still hangs onto the fact that we may run out of food. So excess is stored on our bodies. Just in case the supermarkets run out, you’ve seen it in human behavior. They predict snow in the UK for a day and the shelves empty (just in case it’s actually the start of the new ice age)!! Protein can be thought of as the builder and building material for the body. Our body’s nerves, tissues, bones all are made up of proteins. So proteins become very necessary for them to grow and repair. You can think of them as your construction crew building, crafting and ensuring your body stays in the best state possible. So just to finish it off here are a few top tips with food. Fruits are great but they are still sugar so they can play havoc with your insulin levels. Eat the skins of apples, pears etc. The skin helps the body break it down more slowly making your body burn more energy in the process. An average apple can contain something like 90 calories, it may take 110 calories to digest it skin and all, therefore a negative calorie loss of 20 calories just from eating! In theory a pound of body fat equates to around 3500 calories Don’t overcook you vegetables for the same reason, if you overcook them they are already starting to break down before they’ve even hit the stomach. Again it makes the body work harder. Make sure you drink water regularly, thirst can sometimes be misinterpreted as hunger. A healthy diet and regular exercise, which doesn’t have to be in a gym, can have some amazing results. I have worked with a number of groups last year where the participants have eaten healthy and exercised regularly often more than before and lost not only weight but also changed their body shape considerably. Let’s work on making our nation of convenience into a national of confident individuals, proud of who they are and what they’ve achieved, by just going back to the basics. How can I be linked to Tom Cruise? I have done some work as Associate Personal Trainer for Matt Roberts. Matt Roberts has trained Mel C, Mel C is friends and part of the same girl group as Victoria Beckham. Victoria Beckham is married to David Beckham who is good friends with Tom Cruise. Well would have thought it he never calls or phones when we are linked so closely (laughs out loud) It just shows you also what a small world it really is and how friendship can be shared all around the world without a second thought. Do you ever take the time to sit and talk to your friends or are you someone who unloads everything on them? Some people lack the confidence to tell their story, why not allow the quietest person in the group to lead the conversation one day. You may be surprised at the life changing thoughts they have been afraid to share. If you’re that quiet person and feel you don’t have the confidence to speak up get help to overcome it. Hypnotherapy can help to raise your confidence and self esteem. You may not realise it but many top individuals still have underlying confidence issues. They’ve just learnt how to override it with their conscious mind. Wouldn’t it be an amazing if you could feel confident enough to stand up and say, “This is how I’d do it”.
